Eben K Lee

Mechanical Engineering
Sophomore
Vernon Hills, IL
My name is Eben Lee, and I am a rising junior studying mechanical engineering at the
University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Currently, I’m part of a medical device startup that is
focused on making accessible iron deficiency testing kits and work in a research lab that focuses
on active biohybrid matter systems. In addition to these roles, I work as an undergraduate
teaching assistant for TAM 211: Introductory Statics at UIUC and am helping start a club
focused on networking for Korean students and sharing Korean culture with students on campus.
I also serve as the general affairs manager at KCCU, an organization for Korean Christians at
UIUC that focuses on shepherding a Christian community for primarily students studying abroad
from Korea.
Through my experiences on and off campus, I have developed my passion for entrepreneurship. I
believe it offers me an opportunity to create something new by utilizing my experiences and God
given talents to help solve important issues in the world. My current goal is to apply my
knowledge and experience to start a medical technology company that focuses on making
affordable and accessible medical devices. My interest in medical devices was developed
through my experience at the startup I am at and my experience working as a research intern on
campus. I was able to utilize my background in product design and manufacturing to help design
and develop devices that could be used to benefit people on a day to day basis. Additionally, I
believe that innovations, specifically innovations in the healthcare sector, are often gate kept
from people of lower socioeconomic backgrounds, and I want to work to help work towards
solving this issue. I would like to thank SNUAA for supporting me in the pursuit of my goals
and offering me this scholarship.
