Aranne Claire Jung
Smith College
Neuroscience
Freshman
Woodland HIlls, CA
My name is Jung, Aranne (정아란) and I am from Woodland Hills, California. I am studying neuroscience and statistics at Smith College, where I am also a student-athlete competing on the college’s tennis team.
I am honored to be a recipient of the Dora Windes Zollman Scholarship, Smith College’s highest
academic scholarship. As a Zollman scholar, I am involved in the STRIDE research program on
campus. I work as a research assistant in the Mind in Development Lab, where we investigate
how the adolescent brain develops to support complex cognitive functions.
This academic year, I made the Dean’s List. Moreover, my paper on the haenyeo (해녀) of Jeju
Island and shellfish in Korean history was selected for publication in Smith Writes, an annual
journal dedicated to exemplary work by first-year writers. I am also committed to contributing to
my campus community as a member of the Athletics Sport Committee for Inclusion and
Diversity.
Off campus, I provide tutoring for children through the Help on the Go Program with the
Salvation Army. With the support of the Salvation Army, I helped create an international
program where we work with Korean students from underprivileged backgrounds to help them
enhance their English abilities and develop the confidence to thrive in our increasingly
interconnected world.
This summer, I completed research internships at Emory University Laney Graduate School and
at the UCLA Center for Children’s Oral Health. In the future, I aim to become a biomedical
researcher and pediatric dentist. I want to help children develop life-long good dental practices
and prevent painful cavities, while also conducting clinical research.
