2023 Youth STEM Talk National Competition (3/31/2023)

Dear students, parents, and KSEA members,

The Korean-American Scientists and Engineers Association (KSEA) is pleased to announce the 2023 Youth STEM Talk National Competition. This event aims to provide students in grades 9 through 11 with an opportunity to speak and share their knowledge on topics of interest within the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), ultimately contributing to enhancing their public speech and leadership skills. 1. Themes of the Youth STEM Talk (Choose one of 4 themes)

  • The Universe beyond Our Sight” by presenting 1) microscopic worlds beyond naked sight, 2) their possibly unseen impact on humanity, 3) complex ecosystems that intertwine with macroscopic worlds, and 4) the presenter’s novel ideas on how humanity and these microscopic worlds will interact in the future.
  • Into the Unknown” by discovering 1) novel and engaging topics that build upon possibly already known scientific discoveries, 2) predict the direction this topic will move in the future, and 3) include original and thought-provoking ideas within the presentation about the topic that engage the audience.
  • The World of the Future” by presenting 1) modern technology that has greatly impacted our society, 2) positive and negative effects the technology has on our society and the world beyond, and 3) predicting how this technology will possibly change the direction mankind and the world is moving.
  • In the Search for the Truth” by providing 1) a safe and beneficial environment for the future society and 2) an inclusive and welcoming society for minority people.

2. Eligibility

  • Grades 9 – 11 students in the US
  • The parent (or legal guardian) is a “paid” member of KSEA at the time of registration.
  • Be a new KSEA member at https://www.ksea.org/signUp

After creating your KSEA log-in account, please pay the membership fee in “Membership Information”

3. Competition Format

1st Round: 3-minute talk video competition 

  • The student’s parent or guardian should be a KSEA membership holder
  • 3-minute talk video (Youtube link) submission
  • The top 5 students from each grade (9 through 11) will be selected and invited for a live competition.

2nd Round: 5-minute live competition through Zoom

  • 5-minute talk & 2 min Q/A 

4. Awards (each grade) in 2nd Round

     1st place: $500 
     2nd place: $300 
     3rd place: $200 
     4th/5th place: $50 gift cards

5. Submission Information 

  • Registration is required for submission (Due date: March 31, 2023)

  • How to submit: The submission link will be emailed to all the registered students.

6. Judge Guidelines

  • Video length: 2:30 – 3:00 min for full scores (no longer than 3 min) 
  • The topic must be related to the themes.
  • Upper-level topic (compared to the presenter’s grade). 
  • Logical content and comprehension; clearly explained the topic; and appropriate for a non-specialist audience. 
  • PowerPoint slides, whiteboard, and lecture screen are recommended.
  • Clear lecture information on a screen.
  • Limited usage of images and videos from online sources. 
  • Speech style: presenter must show up during >80% of the whole video length (see below pictures and link).
  • Creative presentation methods will be strongly encouraged.
  • Citation is required: Avoid copyright infringement.
  • The Youth STEM Talk video should be a professional talk. It must be different from the previous video STEM competition (https://tinyurl.com/3t93w4nm).
