KSEA Senior Forum: Playing Tennis in Denmark & Eating Seals in Greenland — Dr. Hosin “David” Lee

Dear KSEA members,

Please join us for the KSEA Senior Forum Series—our monthly virtual gathering that offers a welcoming space for seniors to connect, learn, and share. This month’s forum is open to the public, and we invite KSEA members of all ages and backgrounds to attend.

About the presenter

Dr. Hosin “David” Lee is Professor of Civil & Environmental Engineering and Director of the Laboratory for Advanced Construction Technology (LACT) at the University of Iowa. An internationally recognized expert in AI-based infrastructure, he developed the “PicCrack” pavement-crack analysis software and authored influential work on position-invariant neural networks. He has served as President of iSMARTi, KSCEA, KOTAA, and KSEA, and is a member of the National Academy of Engineering of Korea. His honors include iSMARTi’s Lifetime Achievement Award, KSEA’s Distinguished Membership Award, and Educator of the Year (Utah Engineers Council and ASCE-Utah).

About the talk

“Playing Tennis in Denmark and Eating Seals in Greenland” shares stories from Dr. Lee’s research at the Arctic Technology Center in Denmark and Greenland, supported by the Otto Monsted Professorship and COWI Foundation Fellowship. From tennis in the “world’s happiest country” to tasting seal meat in Greenland and soaking in an Icelandic hot spring with locals, the talk blends academic insights with cultural experiences and humor—including a lighthearted travel vignette by Dr. Cheon of Kumho Petrochemical that ends, “나는 이교수가 하라는 대로 해야했다. 나도 왜 그런지 잘 모르겠다.”
