HieYon Choi
Praised for her artistry and expressive depth, HieYon Choi is one of the most sought-after pianists of her generation. Gramophone hailed her Beethoven recording as “one of this sonata’s greatest-ever recorded interpretations… a model of intelligent bravura,” and the Washington Post praised her “the evening’s most impressive performance… a fluent, precise and graceful” account of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4.
She gained international recognition with prizes at the Kapell, Epinal, Busoni, and Viotti International Competitions, and has performed with the LA Philharmonic, National Symphony Orchestra (Washington, D.C.), Rundfunkorchester Berlin, Berlin Symphoniker, Seoul Philharmonic, and Korean Broadcast Symphony.
A highlight of her career was the complete Beethoven sonata cycle at Kumho Art Hall in Seoul, later followed by additional Beethoven cycles across Europe, the U.S., and Korea. Her discography includes the complete Beethoven sonatas (Decca Korea, 2025), Debussy Études, Liszt Paganini Études, and Chopin Études.
In 2023/24, she joined the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University after 24 years on the faculty of Seoul National University. She has served as a juror at the world’s most prestigious piano competitions, including the Beethoven in Vienna and Busoni in Italy.

The August 9 Recital is part of the Beethovenian Collective’s inaugural project, inviting tax-deductible contributions in support of our artistic mission as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

저는 안현정이라고 합니다. 서울대학교 음악대학 10학번으로, 현재 미국 캘리포니아 샌디에고에 거주하고 있습니다. 서울대학교 미주동창회를 통해 선생님께 연락드리게 되었습니다.
다름이 아니라, 저와 음대 동문인 정설영(11학번), 그리고 저희 두 사람의 은사이신 최희연 교수님과 함께 Beethovenian Collective라는 비영리 음악 단체를 설립하였기에 소개드리고자 합니다. 저는 현재 이 단체의 Founding Board Member이자 California Regional Director를 맡고 있습니다. 최희연 교수님께서는 서울대 음대에서 23년간 재직하신 후, 재작년부터 볼티모어 Johns Hopkins University 산하 Peabody Conservatory 교수로 부임하셨습니다.
저희 단체는 이제 막 501(c)(3) 등록을 마치고 본격적인 활동을 시작하는 단계로, 오는 8월 9일 샌디에고에서 창립 기념 Fundraising Recital을 개최합니다. 제가 행사를 주관하고, 최희연 교수님께서 직접 연주해 주실 예정입니다. 또한, 서울대 화학과 수료 후 작곡과 학·석사를 마치신 김택수 선배님(현 샌디에고 음대 교수, 이번 여름 인디애나 음대로 부임 예정)도 참석하실 예정입니다.
앞으로 Beethovenian Collective는 주마다 챕터를 나누어 본격적으로 활동할 예정이며, 샌디에고를 비롯한 남가주 지역에서는 Salon Recital Series, 워크숍, 콩쿠르 등 다양한 프로그램을 운영해 나갈 계획입니다.
이번 이벤트를 캘리포니아, 특히 남가주 및 샌디에고 지역에 거주하시는 동문 선배님들께 전달드리고 초대드리고 싶습니다. 혹시 해당 지역 동문분들의 연락처를 안내받을 수 있을까요?
